Abby and Jay’s story began just like so many modern love stories—on social media. After adding each other as friends, they started talking and instantly connected. Just a few days later, Jay asked Abby out to dinner at a cozy seafood restaurant on the water in St. Marys, Georgia. That first date turned into a lasting tradition—each year they return to that same restaurant to celebrate their anniversary. Together, Abby and Jay share a love for the outdoors. They spend their free time hunting, fishing, and boating. So, naturally when it came time to plan their engagement at Cumberland Island, it felt like the perfect place. When Abby shared her idea with me, I lit up. I had never been to the island before, so I couldn’t wait to capture their love in such a romantic setting.

Exploring Georgia’s Most Romantic Island

To start off their engagement session, we met at a boat ramp in St. Marys, Georgia and took a 15-minute boat ride over to the island. Upon arriving, we were welcomed by towering oaks draped in Spanish moss, wild horses grazing nearby, and deer quietly moving through the trees. Even their sweet pup, River, joined us for the session—which made the day feel even more personal and true to them.

Though Cumberland Island is over 18 miles long with many location options, our first stop was the Dungeness Ruins. With their haunting history of what used to be a luxury lifestyle and the glowy light filtering through the trees it added such a unique feel. From there, we made our way to the beach, where soft waves and a beautiful sunset set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Why Cumberland Island Is a Hidden Gem

Cumberland Island is Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island and is protected as a national seashore. There are no shops or restaurants—just nature in its purest form. Visitors can hike the islands scenic trails, camp, and explore miles of shoreline with peaceful views. You can reach the island by ferry or private boat, just like we did. It’s a hidden gem for any outdoor-loving couple.

A Dreamy Session to Remember

Their engagement on Cumberland Island was more than just a session—it was a reflection of who they are. Peaceful, adventurous, and full of love. These are the moments I live for as a photographer: stories rooted in meaning, set against unforgettable backdrops. And this one? It’s a favorite I’ll never forget. I love traveling for love stories and know this is only the beginning.
